2
2 Presentation overview Why do you need data? Where to find data? National Energy Use Database (NEUD) What NEUD offers... Recap
3
3 Why do you need data? JUSTIFICATION ! Data can justify: –Ideas –Policy –Programs –Initiatives –Company direction –Government direction
4
4 Where to find data? Internet search Statistics Canada Natural Resources Canada ! –National Energy Use Database
5
5 National Energy Use Database (NEUD) Where does NEUD fit? –Below is a segment of the departmental organization chart NEUD mission –Improve knowledge & understanding of where & how energy is used in all Canadian sectors Natural Resources Canada Office of Energy Efficiency NEUD
6
6 What NEUD offers... Not a single database NEUD collects and analyzes numerous databases –Sector specific national level surveys –Major appliances shipment trend data –Trends on Canadian energy use Reports published include –Analytical findings –Data tables oee.nrcan.gc.ca/statistics
7
7 2003 Survey of Household Energy Use (SHEU) Results represent over 11 million households across Canada Survey asked over 270 questions on: –Dwelling characteristics –Space & water heating –Air conditioning –Major appliances –Home electronics –Lighting –ENERGY STAR ® –Actual energy use Data collection for 2007 survey currently under way
8
8 Other national level NEUD surveys Commercial & Institutional Consumption of Energy Survey –Collects energy consumption data of establishments –Annual survey Canadian Vehicle Survey –Collects on–road transportation activity & vehicle fuel consumption data –Annual survey Industrial Consumption of Energy Survey –Collects energy consumption data of establishments –Annual survey
9
9 Major Appliances Shipment Trends for 1990 – 2005 Annual report covers major appliances: –Refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, electric ranges, clothes washers & electric clothes dryers Purpose: –Observe shipment characteristics Sizes Types Retail versus builder distribution ENERGY STAR – Shipment-weighted average annual unit energy consumption Data source: –Canadian Appliance Manufactures Association
10
10 Energy Use Data Handbook for 1990 – 2005 Annual trend report covers five sectors –Residential, commercial/institutional, industrial, transportation & electricity generation Provides national data on: –Activities & indicators influencing energy use –Energy use & greenhouse gas emissions by energy source by end-use End-uses differ by sector –Residential end-uses: space heating, water heating, major appliances, other appliances, lighting and space cooling Provincial data available on-line –“Comprehensive Energy Use Database”
11
11 What else NEUD offers... Publications available for all previously mentioned databases Special tabulations –Not limited to data presentation used in publications –Request data to be presented differently EXAMPLE: 2003 Survey of Household Energy Use Expert analysis –Advice on interpretation –Questions and answers Publication presents refrigerator age data by age categories Publication presents refrigerator age data by age categories Request Special Tabulation average age of refrigerators Request Special Tabulation average age of refrigerators
12
12 Recap NEUD is best source for Canadian energy use data –Houses numerous databases –Expert analysis –ENERGY STAR in Canada Publications provide –Analytical findings –Data tables Special tabulations –Change way data was presented in a publication EXAMPLE: Request provincial data instead of regional data –Available by request
