1 Pierre Gélat National Physical Laboratory 3 April 2003 Theoretical Modelling within the Acoustics Group at the National Physical Laboratory

2 Acoustics at NPL  The fundamental role of the Acoustics Group at the National Physical Laboratory is to develop and maintain primary measurement standards for sound in air and water across a wide range of frequencies, from the infrasonic to tens of megahertz.  A range of high quality measurements services are delivered to users throughout the UK to support trade, manufacturing, science, health & safety, environmental protection, quality assurance, statute and regulation. Our measurement systems and facilities are state-of-the-art, providing in many instances unrivalled precision, accuracy, stability and sensitivity. http://www.npl.co.uk/npl/acoustics

3 Theoretical Modelling  Theoretical modelling is often carried out in order to assist measurement  The following topics will be discussed:  Developments in Acoustic Emission at NPL  Radiation Force Calculations on Apertured Piston Fields  Development of a Theoretical Model for Membrane Hydrophone Transfer Characteristics  Finite Element Model of an Ear Simulator http://www.npl.co.uk/npl/acoustics
