Packet Data Access Points and Some Configurable Parameters in cdma2000 1x RTT Network Salih Ergut January 2004
2
Objectives High level overview of the 3G packet data network Data access points for packet data call Some configurable parameters at BSC Better understanding of use cases
3
Network Layout Ericsson Black Mountain UCSD MSC BSC PSTN Packet Network PDSN
4
Mobile 1/2 Ethereal Provides full PPP frames transmitted by the mobile. TCP parameters such as window size, re-transmissions, etc. can be extracted Freeware (http://www.ethereal.com)http://www.ethereal.com
5
Mobile 2/2 Mobile Monitoring Tool (TEMS or CAIT) RF parameters Call events/statistics TCP level throughput and delay measurements Traffic channel quality and characterization Power control levels on the forward and reverse links Handoffs, neighbor lists Ec/Io for each finger of the Rake receiver and their sum
6
BSC 1/2 Diagnostic logging can be done at BSC to get: Complete call flow and details of messages Air Interface (Mobile – RBS – BSC) A1 Interface (BSC – MSC) A11 Interface (BSC/PCF – PDSN)
7
BSC 2/2 Some additional optional information that we can log are: Service Option, Radio Configuration, forward power control mode Frame errors, rate information and quality info Supplemental channel triggering information Hard-handoff and soft-handoff triggering information PN phases in the neighbor-list messages etc.
8
RBS Current users on each sector of RBS and their basic connections information such as: Walsh codes/lengths Supplemental channel information
9
PDSN Ethereal in R-P link Ethereal can decode the GRE (A10 – user plane) and UDP (A11 – signaling) frames sent between BSC/PCF and PDSN Call Flow Tracing Details of PPP handshaking between mobile and PDSN for a particular call
10
Configuration Parameters at BSC Some parameters for different algorithms such as power control, admission control, packet data granting, etc. is configurable. However these parameters affect all the users. Some parameters for transmit power can be modified for a particular RBS without interfering with users at different cells.
11
Example Parameters Some global parameters Tune parameters (such as FER, packet size, bandwidth utilization, etc.) for supplemental channel triggering algorithms Controlling inactivity timers Some local parameters Max supplemental channel data rate Min pilot/synch/paging channel to forward link channel ratio to be maintained at base station Individual sectors can be turned off for a controlled RF environment
