1 Sleep-dependent Memory Experiment Kimberly M. Fenn, Ph.D David Zachary Hambrick, Ph.D Department of Psychology, Michigan State University To start the presentation, press “F5” on your keyboard or click on “Slide Show” (on the tool bar) and then click the leftmost button, “From Beginning”. When the presentation begins, press the space bar to start the experiment.

2 Welcome to the Sleep-dependent Memory Experiment!  This experiment is designed to test how well you process memory during your sleep. This file contains the training session for the experiment.  During this session, which should be conducted in the evening, you will learn 40 word pairs and will be tested on them.  In your next session, which should be conducted the morning after you complete this session, you will again be tested on the word pairs.  After you have completed both tests, you can use the accompanying answer key to score your responses. Directions for calculating your sleep-dependent memory score are included on the answer key. Press the space bar to advance to the experiment instructions.

3  In this experiment, you will be given a set of word pairs. An example of a word pair is:  POLICE - CAR  Each word pair will be displayed for 4 seconds. The presentation will proceed automatically; you will not need to advance the slides.  Your task is to remember the association between each word in the word pair. After you have seen all of the word pairs, you will be tested on each pair.  During the test, you will be given the first word in the pair (POLICE) and will be asked to recall the second word (CAR).  Please pay close attention to each word pair.  Good luck!
