Wages and employment trends Median wages: $13.77 hourly, $28,650 annual Employment (2008) :484,000 employees Projected job openings (2008-2018): 217,800 Formal training, experience from externships and certification will put you higher on the pay scale when you become a medical assistant.

To become a medical assistant… Take some Medical assisting courses (some high schools have it and some don’t) Improve you opportunities by getting certified. You will be responsible for everything from answering phones and filing medical records to drawing blood and processing lab specimens. You must be detail-oriented and work well with a team. You must be friendly and caring if you want to become a medical assistant because you will be the first person they’ll be seeing.

How long it takes Programs usually last 1 year and result in a certificate or diploma, or 2 years and result in associate’s degree. Courses cover anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, as well as typing, transcription, recordkeeping, accounting, and insurance processing.
