What is strengths-based approach? Focus on positive characteristics, abilities, and experiences of the client. Building upon client’s strengths when addressing current issues. You are most interested in the client’s resources and abilities. You role is to facilitate finding your client’s strengths. Focusing on positives instead of negatives empower clients to believe change is possible and that they have the ability to make it happen.
3
How do implement the strengths based approach? Begin by asking clients to recall how they solved problems in the past. Point out successes that they have had in school, work, home, relationships, etc. Examples: “Tell me about a time when you faced a similar problem, how did you handle it.” “What do you consider your most important ability?”
