Oct. 17 2005 - RoN meetingResource Brokering This research project was presented during the RoN meeting in April 2005. Work has been ongoing since. The idea is to allow end user to book ahead computing and network resources for end to end connectivity. To accomplish this we need: 1. a description of the topology of the network and the resources; 2. a broker that can allocate resources to users, after verifying their availability; 3. a mechanism to determine that end to end paths are available and possible; 4. a resource manager that will setup the appropriate connections when the time of the reservation comes.

Oct. 17 2005 - RoN meetingResource Brokering Brokering and topology We use RDF file to describe the computing and network elements and their connections. Some snippets: Rembrandt1 ComputingElement Rembrandt1:eth0 a Device a Device Connections a Device Interface

Oct. 17 2005 - RoN meetingResource Brokering Brokering and management Client can book resources via Web Services interfaces. At booking time no connections are setup among resources; when the reservation time comes up the connections among resources are put into place. In our case we setup cross-connection in the Optical Switch located in the UvA/SARA Lighthouse.

Oct. 17 2005 - RoN meetingResource Brokering Showcasing at SC|05 SC|05 (SuperComputing 2005) will be held in Seattle between November 12 and November 18. We plan to show the first implementation of the Resource Brokering and Management in the Dutch Pavillion booth. The idea is to allow visitor to the booth see how a reservation can be made and how a path can be setup: Amsterdam Chicago Lighthouse Node_a Node_b

Oct. 17 2005 - RoN meetingResource Brokering Future developments We are interested in: -extending the use of RDF as the source of information on the underlying network; -interfacing this reservation system with upstream reservation system. Can we communicate and how to the lightpath reservation systems of SURFnet6? - investigating the security mechanism to make the service available to authorized users only. For now: -A-Select for the access to the Portal -Web Services Authorization mechanism that comes with Python ZSI, the web service implementation we are using
