Black IIT MICE windows new attachment concept This design proposes an attachment for the windows assembly using Garlock Helicoflex or equivalent seal and a periphery wedge retainer for both, absorber and manifold windows. A tool is designed to protect the delicate windows for handling and to aid on the installation and removal of the windows for either of the chambers

Black IIT Method of operation Pre installation- The seals are installed in grooves machined in the seating flange of the manifold or vacuum chamber The window is attached to the leading end of the tool plunger. 1-The tool outer housing is bayonet inserted and locked in to the manifold or chamber shell which becomes the fulcrum for the operation of the tool

Black IIT 2-The tool plunger is guided and positioned aligned through the tool housing and seated on to the window seat By an integral mechanical device of the tool, the plunger is actuated to develop the operating compression of the seals ~800 lb/in Helium sealing force. Helium sealing level: Q< 10 -13 atm cm 3 /s

Black IIT 3-With the same tool wedge shaped retaining segments (parts assembled on the window) are expanded in to the groove at the periphery of the manifold shell, wedging the window in place and maintaining the required operating compression for the seals at all temperature and pressure variations

10 5/7/2003Edgar L. Black IIT To complete the installation, the window/plunger attachment is unlocked, the plunger is retracted and the tool assembly is removed. To remove a window the process on 1 and 2 are repeated and on 3- the segments are retracted
