Shapefiles for Meteoalarm Markus Ungersböck ZAMG-Salzburg

19-20.03.2008 New partners meeting Folie 2 Shapefiles for Meteoalarm  The basics (Meteoalarm in 6 Steps, Section 2)  A) contact me and request the initial shape and tell me your desired projection for the national map.  Important: country should be easy to recognize – at least for residents

19-20.03.2008 New partners meeting Folie 3 Shapefiles for Meteoalarm  B) in return you’ll get your country with it’s neighbors  C) split your country into warning regions and provide for each the name and a short cut (3 characters)

19-20.03.2008 New partners meeting Folie 4 Shapefiles for Meteoalarm  The Attribute table should look like this  For the region names UTF-8 are allowed – the short cut is restricted to ASCII (case insensitive)  It is also helpful if you send additional a list with the region names and short cuts (Word, Excel, etc) as ArcGIS can not handle all UTF-8 characters

19-20.03.2008 New partners meeting Folie 5 Shapefiles for Meteoalarm Bad Example of warning regions – with to detailed region borders

19-20.03.2008 New partners meeting Folie 6 Shapefiles for Meteoalarm The close-up reveals the problem, we have too much information  1. slows down the map creation on the server  2. images are more or less ugly

19-20.03.2008 New partners meeting Folie 7 Shapefiles for Meteoalarm After some smoothing (removing about 80% of invisible points) D) you’ll get the map for the final approval. CHECK: general representation correct regions correct names correct short cuts E) If everything is OK send me your final approval!

19-20.03.2008 New partners meeting Folie 8 Shapefiles for Meteoalarm Final remark: Changes of the final shape are possible but very time consuming - especially to keep the GIS database consistent - so it is not so easy to change the shape in a short time. Please double check everything (with everybody in your department) before submitting your OK. Thank you for your attention!
