Technology Infrastructure SUNY will need to produce images for use in the class room SUNY can establish mechanisms for campuses to share images and reduce duplication of effort SUNY will need to adopt a variety of standards to implement a U-wide solution

Technology Infrastructure Standards –Image quality (tiered dependent on use) –Metadata standards –Copyright –Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH)

SUNY System of Open Archives Implementation

Technology Infrastructure Tools for cataloging, storage and retrieval should be separated from tools for classroom use (online or traditional) Tools for online and in class instruction will be evolving over the next several years – this will be a dynamic environment

Technology Infrastructure Where we are now –Dspace is now in production at http://dspace.sunyconnect.suny.edu Testing use with images –Harvester is being tested (Open Source – Public Knowledge Project) –UB and Stony Brook are using ContentDM (OAI compliant)

Governance We are establishing a team to oversee our digital repository (images, PDFs, data sets, audio, etc.) –Approve campus contributions/collections –Establish workgroups to recommend specific standards –Approve/adopt standard, policies and best practices

Governance While overall planning is taking place we’re laying the groundwork for image standards –A meeting to discuss image standards is being held on March 21. Participants include 2 librarians, a slide curator and a faculty member. UBdigit already has many standards defined –Additional teams will need to be established

Conclusion We will create a technology environment that will allow us to easily share images across the SUNY system Creating an environment to allow for the images from a variety of sources to be easily included in teaching and learning environment will require additional effort.
