2 The main idea of the unit
The unit talks about the change of the world climate. More snow melts because of global warming. This can cause a lot of damage to the Earth. There was a conference about the climate and pollution in Kyoto in Japan. Scientists began making airplane reservations. One scientist thought that it was better to go by train. 5 Connecting sentences with “and / but”
We use “and” to connect two sentences which have similar ideas. He didn’t have to travel for work, and his friends and family lived nearby. We use ”but” to connect two sentences with contrasting ideas. He was very tired , but he kept working. When the subject of both sentences is the same, we can put a pronoun in the second sentence. Kim was very angry, but she didn’t show it. We use “ ,” before “but”. Maha kept calling, but no one answered.

6 Grammar Modal verbs showing ability or possibility
We use “can” to express ability or possibility in the present. I can speak English. ( ability) He can come tomorrow. ( possibility) We use “could” to express possibility or ability in the past. He could work hard when he was young. ( ability ) He could take the train. ( possibility)

7 Modal verbs Negative forms:
We use “not” after “can” or “could” then the base verb to change to the negative form. He can’t come today. They couldn’t reach the station because of the bad weather yesterday. Main structure: can / could + base verb ( infinitive without “to”) can / could + not + base verb. ( negative form)
