Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment Thematic group 5 : Building Components (including windows and facades) Peter Wouters Belgian Building Research Institute EnerBuild workshop Lyon –24 October 2002

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment Research in the seventies till beginning of eighties Energy use for heating in dwellings

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment Thermal comfort in winter Heating energy Thermal insulation Optimisation challenge very simple...

Thermal Comfort Acoustical Comfort Air quality Visual comfort BUILDING INSTALLATIONS ENERGY USERS

Very important for designing and assessing (innovative)building envelopes

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment Glazing Low heat losses Control of solar gains useful in winter not desirable in summer Contact with outside Minimisation of artificial lighting No glare problems... Acoustics Additional concerns Pre-heating ventilation air Maintenance Fire regulations esthetics... Costs

The availability of energy efficient technology is essential for improving the performances of the building stock...

Innovative glazing systems Evacuated glazing Aerogel glazing

Also attention for source control

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment Natural and artificial lighting Crucial aspect in design concept

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment Understanding control of innovative systems.. Intelligent control very important!

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment In order to achieve quality, it is not sufficient to have good technology Architecture is also crucial...

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment Material technology Projects Solar Power Envelope Durable peak performance evacuated glazing Dynamic building energy performance assessment Study and evaluation of integrated solar façade Insulating, light transmitting aerogel glazing Materials for healthy indoor spaces - MATHIS Solar building facades Design study of thermal diode wall Design of multi-functional ventilated façade Façade-roof integrated PV (Solar-Collect)

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment Façade integration Projects Solar Power Envelope Durable peak performance evacuated glazing Dynamic building energy performance assessment Study and evaluation of integrated solar façade Insulating, light transmitting aerogel glazing Materials for healthy indoor spaces - MATHIS Solar building facades Design study of thermal diode wall Design of multi-functional ventilated façade Façade-roof integrated PV (Solar-Collect)

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment A very important observation… For many technological areas, a wide offer of energy efficient technology at competitive prices exist but limited use by market Creating appropriate market conditions probably in many areas more important than developing new technologies

Member states European Directives Construction Product Directive (1989) Directive on Energy Performance (2002?) Obligation to impose Energy Performance Regulation, energy certification and inspections CEN ( common products ) EOTA (innovative products) Obligation to express performances in line with CEN and EOTA procedures Missing procedures Not sufficiently refined procedures Almost no common procedures at European level Research at national level for developing procedures No incentive for industry for product optimisation Intensive, but fragmented national research activities which result in heterogenous market conditions

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment Conclusions Major developments during 2 last decades With respect to the needs Impressive development in technology Integrated approach far from evident Indoor climate Energy use at micro- and macro-scale Major challenge : Create appropriate assessment tools (including requirements and implementation of legislation) A correct implementation of the EPD An attractive framework for stimulating innovation
