Rationale for the COLMSCT Project – Using Technology in Marking eTMAs Move from pen and paper technology in marking eTMAs to PC and Key Board R07 Massive reflective process for over thirty T171 Lecturers Supported by F2F meeting, Regional on-line forum and National forums

COLMSCT Tablet PC Project What would ink technology In assessment bring to the feedback process Two phases of; 5 Lecturers 75 students
5
The Process
6
Overall Aims and Objectives Evaluate if the Tablet PC could be used by lecturers in marking eTMAs Evaluate the teaching and learning between lecturer and student not my lecturers Evaluate motivational issues for distance lecturers in using new technology Considerations for Science, Maths and Systems
7
eTMAs marked by a Lecturer with a Tablet PC
8
What did a new technology In assessment bring to the feedback process The benefits of the Tablet PC in marking eTMAs is that the lecturer can directly annotate a students script Feedback can be placed at a relevant place in the eTMA to the point being raised It can be used to provide feedback in challenging assessment areas, Science, Maths and Computing, systems diagramming 80% of students like the personalisation of the hand-written feedback
9
Supporting Geographically Isolated Lecturers at a Distance Peer Support - Pedagogy Technology – Web 2.0 technologies Forum and Wiki Develop a Community of Practice Share marked scripts Use Technology creatively
10
What was the Forum used for? Lecturers shared own practice in using Tablet PC Main posts around periods of marking eTMAs Lecturers shared feedback from students with each other Lecturers reflection on practice shared with each other Polarised views Forum - interactive tutorial for COLMSCT Expert Forum To support one week asynchronous staff development
11
COLMSCT Tablet PC Team Forum with Sub-Forums
12
Evaluation of the Forum Posts Reflection on practice in posts between lecturers Lecturers working practice, highly personal, Individual emotional connectivity Posts showed polarised views on how to mark a script Past and current practice reflected on Minimal sharing of marked examples of scripts occurred Sharing scripts - infringement of private relationships

“I’m not always as imaginative as I could be and seeing what other people do gives me ideas as to how I can do something similar and whether I would want to do that, or sparks me off with, “Ooh now I like that, but what if I did this as well?” to take it a little bit further” In –depth Interview
14
Saw lack of shared marked examples as technical issue Lack of enthusiasm, motivation to download e-mail attachments My Vision for the wiki, was to address sharing of marked examples Hoping for more creative examples and development of IT skills Main contributions from Project Leader Two other contributions Team Members These included excellent illustrative examples My Vision for the Wiki
15
http://conclave.open.ac.uk/usingtabletpcs/index.php/Main_Page Easier sharing of illustrations of creative use of electronic ink privacy issues
16
Mind- Map of Community of Practice 2006 – 2007 supported with Web 2.0 Reflection current/old practice occurred during new use of technology in Assessment - This reflection was captured within the Forum
17
Lecturers views of Forum - Questionnaire Forum Forum much easier place to express ideas Useful for discussing ideas whilst marking
18
Lecturers views of Wiki - Questionnaire Wiki useful for how the system works for others, conference equally as useful Needed to sound authoritative to add content to wiki, as a beginner did not add Collaborative construction of wiki is a good feature I have never contributed to a wiki before and feel unsure about how to do this It looks very professional and therefore I feel I am unlikely to be able to contribute anything of additional value I would find the wiki most useful for illustrations and helpful hints Lack of time, just to busy to add anything
19
Achievements of a Community of Practice Peer support for technology in assessment Developed a Community of Practice Expert Forum 5 July 200 IET, Science, Technology Maths and Computing The SoTL Commons 1-2 November 2007 Georgia, USA Use of Tablet PC with Office 2007 on T175 Liz Thackray – COLMSCT Fellow 2007 – 2009 Regional Workshops

“It may be some deep forgotten psychological event, but I quite like to see hand written notes in the margins or end of paragraphs? It may be memories of Ms Store, my secondary school French teacher” Post from Member of Tablet PC Team – 23/3/2006 – Feedback from student
