1 What is manifest destiny? How do you think this relates to westward expansion?

2 The US in 1800 Why was New Orleans So important?

3 Napoleon Bonaparte had big plans, not only for New Orleans but for Louisiana as well.

4 And what about Louisiana territory? Why did the French want it? What did the French plan to do with the land?

5 If you were President Jefferson, What would YOU do? 1. Offer to buy just the city of New Orleans from France so that American Farmers can export from that port. 2. Threaten to go to war if France Does not hand over New Orleans To the US. 3. Offer to buy all of the Louisiana Territory including New Orleans, so that the French are no longer a threat. In small groups please make a decision. BE READY TO EXPLAIN WHY!

6 So what really happened? Jefferson chose to buy all of the Louisiana Territory for a grand total of $15 Million. But was this constitutional?

7 HOMEWORK Read pages 198-200 and 212-213. Finish answering the questions on the handout. DUE MONDAY!!!!
