LGS Project Meeting February 1, 2006 Agenda 1.IPT status updates: Laser facility, AO optomechanics, AO software (Bouchez, Roberts, Trinh; 30 min) 2.Sum-Frequency Laser theory (Kibblewhite; 30 min) 3.Multiple star formation at the bottom of the IMF (Kraus; 30 min)

2 LGS project infrastructure AO system calendar: http://www.google.com/calendar Login: palomar.ao Password: [same as harbor] Palomar AO lab: –Please keep the lab clean. –Please mark optomechanics you use on the checkout sheet on the gray cabinet. Aircraft avoidance –We have applied to the FAA for a change in operating parameters, increasing the elevation angle range to 30º-90º.

3 Budget update COO portion of project is over budget by $50k, primarily due to higher than expected labor and equipment costs. JPL portion of project is on budget, with some adjustment of planned labor for remainder of FY due to unplanned equipment costs.

4 LGS Facility update (1) Chicago Sum Frequency Laser Servicing mission this week –Replacing 1.06 µm (and maybe 1.32 µm ) laser heads. –Fixing plumbing leaks. Several new intra-cavity non-linear crystals and SFG crystals have been ordered. Making good progress on the characterization of the wavelength tuning etalons and optimization of the servo. BTO Full cleaning and recalibration of BTO beam train will be required after the telescope engineering run. First results from laser diagnostics benches: see Twiki site, LGS Facility IPT minutesLGS Facility IPT minutes

5 LGS Facility update (2) Laser automation LGS computer is now able to control etalon temps. Working on communication with laser servo control box (provides laser photodiode powers, control of frequency and phase servo loops). Next steps: Read laser diagnostics bench photodiodes and save all data to AO database. Safety systems Some improvements to aircraft avoidance software in the works.

6 AO Bench Opto-mechanics February –Dichroic For LGS, a full field dichroic that can be motored out of the way for laser acquisition For NGS, a slightly larger reflecting spot The optics will be switched out manually between runs April –Dichroic Implement switching between dichroic and reflecting spot via motorized linear stage –LOWFS Re-layout LOWFS and acquisition camera in order to put the LOWFS directly in the beam path and remove the pick off requirement Testing to determine the cause of the observed loss of light in the LOWFS path

7 Dichroic Layout For February

8 Full Field Dichroic Optic InOptic Out

9 Conceptual Layout for April

10 Conceptual Layout - Detail

11 AO Software Current Efforts –TAO update for Feb run New GUI modes for LGS, NGS and Dual NGS Functionality to be filled in over the next couple of months –LOWFP bug fix - Feb In process For April –Implementation of new Aerotech stages for LOWFS and dichroic
