EDGE™ Phase 0: Planning Mission Statement Product Description The LED lighting technology project aims to bring about new feasible technology for everyday lighting on the RIT campus. LED lights are more energy efficient than regular lighting and this technology has not yet developed a useful product. Using LEDs in dorms, buildings, or for outdoor lighting will be very advantageous. Key Business Goals The primary business goals of this product are to: Develop a new energy efficient means of lighting that can replace classic filament light bulbs Decrease the use of natural resources in homes and businesses by consuming less energy through a better technology Create a new product in the market of lighting technology Primary Market The primary market for this LED lighting technology is the Rochester Institute of Technology. This lighting can be used in various places around the campus, such as in dorms, classrooms, auditoriums, or for outdoor lighting. Secondary Market A secondary market for this product can expand to average homes and businesses. Cheaper lighting will be appealing to most anyone who is willing to adapt the technology. Stakeholders Stakeholders in the design of our product include the following: RIT Students RIT Facilities Management RIT Public Safety RIT Finance and Administration RIT Faculty Parents Energy Company

EDGE™ Phase 0: Planning Staffing Requirements Mechanical Engineers 2 Mechanical engineers would be in charge develop the overall package for the LED technology. A fixture to encase the LEDs needs to be developed that would suit the area where the lighting will be positioned. CAD experience as well as some manufacturing experience is necessary to develop a finished product. Electrical Engineers 2 Electrical engineers will use their knowledge to develop the circuitry needed for the lighting. Also, electrical engineers will prepare the electronic hardware to be mounted into the device. A system needs to be developed that will convert AC power to DC power so the LEDs can be used. Industrial and Systems Engineers 1 Industrial engineers will evaluate the efficiency of the LED lighting system as well as run simulations during the process to ensure proper use of all materials. They will be very involved with the customer and will be one of the main contacts to the customer during the project. Can also utilize any mechanical engineering skills to aid in the production of the product. Computer Engineers 1 Computer engineers would mainly utilize their knowledge of electrical engineering to perform most of the tasks required of the LED lighting project. On top of that, computer engineers could program low-level code for hardware that would go along with an LED system. Business Majors 1 The business major will not be needed until the end of the project when the product can be marketed and sold to various customers. The primary customer will be RIT, but an entrepreneurial opportunity will be developed so that the product can be used in various markets publically. Skills in management and entrepreneurship will be helpful.

EDGE™ Phase 1: Concept Development Identify Customer Needs - Interviews Primary Customer RIT (Info from past senior design team) - Positive benefit to cost ratio, Long system lifespan, Reduction of the energy wasted by the RIT campus, A decrease in the amount of energy purchased by RIT, Help to foster a technology which will allow RIT to sustain the surrounding ecosystems, Increase RIT's utilization of natural resources, Reduction in the greenhouse gas emissions of the RIT campus. Other Stakeholders Plan to Interview – RIT Facilities Management Dr. Robert Stevens Dr. Edward Hensel An RIT Student Past Senior Design Team P07421 – Worked on the Wind-Solar Parking Lot Light

EDGE™ Phase 1: Concept Development Identify Customer Needs - Benchmarking Competitive or Cooperative Solutions Common Light Bulb Breakdown Conduct a benchmarking teardown session using various lighting apparatus that are already in existence, such as a desk lamp, a fluorescent lamp, overhead lighting (examine the mount as well), stage lighting, etc. Also, should include some LED technology lighting into that breakdown, such as an LED flashlight or patio lighting. Record notes on both technologies and how they work to use for the final product. Special care should be taken on the current technology because the new technology will have to be similar to replace it. Internet Search LED Technology Some LED lighting technology already exists to a smaller extent. Some of those products include: LED Underwater Livewell Lights, Smith and Wesson Galaxy Flashlight, and Westinghouse LED Umbrella Lamp. Also, there are several larger LED light bulbs that may be used in the project. Existing Lighting Technology Technical Literature Search Quantify and Identify Look beyond the popular press and everyday internet resources. Use the Wallace library and conduct searches of the engineering technical literature. Use resources like ASME, IEEE, Codes and Standards, Compendex, Science Citations Index, and technical journals to get the most current and up to date peer-reviewed technical information in your field. Look for technical conference proceedings. Check out what is happening at other univiersities. Search government web sites of agencies that have an interest in your market area, such as DOD, DOE, Census, Library of Congress, NASA, Commerce, NIH, Dept of Interior, Homeland security, grants.gov, etc

EDGE™ Phase 1: Concept Development Identify Customer Needs - Interpret Needs Statements: 1.Express the need in terms of what the product has to do, not in terms of how the product might do it. 2.Express the need as specifically as the raw data. 3.Use positive phrasing 4.Express the needs as attributes of the product Graphical Interpretation 1.Propose a first draft affinity diagram based on your data collected 2.Propose a first draft objective tree based on your data collected Organize the Needs into a Hierarchy 1.Propose a first draft based on your data collected Establish the Relative Importance of the Needs 1.Propose a first draft based on your data collected Reflect on the Results and the Process 1.Propose a first draft based on your data collected
