OIT Services Clean Access What is it? Clean access is a solution provided by Cisco, Inc. that performs network validation. The software performs the following functions: Requires authentication to the network Validates whether the system connecting to the network meets the minimum security standards Quarantines the system until it meets the minimum security standards Provides access to the remediation sites Once the system is validated as “clean,” allows access to the network
16
OIT Services Clean Access Why is WCL implementing it? Each semester, student machines are introduced to the campus that potentially contain harmful viruses and malware. During the first few days of every semester, worms and viruses attempt to spread to unpatched/vulnerable machines. To protect the WCL network, we must insure that virus software and operating system critical updates/patches are current and maintained. CCA – Effective for WCL to protect the network Saves time for the User Protects the User’s Computer
17
OIT Services Clean Access What are the “validation rules”? For Summer and Fall semesters, WCL is configuring Cisco Clean Access to validate the following: “Automatic Updates” is enabled and set to either 1) Download and Prompt or 2) Automatic Install Check for a current release of Norton AntiVirus software and current virus definitions Check for current Windows Critical Updates for Windows XP, 2000, ME, and 98 machines.
18
OIT Services Clean Access How does it work? 1.User connects to the WCL network (wired or wireless) 2.User opens Internet Explorer and is automatically redirected to a webpage 3.The web page provides instructions and a link to download and install the validation client known as the “Cisco Clean Access Agent” 4.Once launched, the Agent downloads the validation rules and processes them 5.If the workstation fails the test, it is allowed Internet access only to the remediation sites for a period of about 2 hours 6.Once all issues are resolved, full network access is provided
19
OIT Services Clean Access What remediation steps are available? Authentication Failure. If a user’s systems fails authentication, the user is instructed to provide the correct AU username and password. If the user has forgotten his/her password, he/she is instructed to contact the Student Lab Help Desk (you must provide your AU ID number). comptech@wcl.american.edu or x. 4361.comptech@wcl.american.edu AntiVirus Failure. AU provides Notron AntiVirus free to students. It is required that all PCs connected to the campus network be running AntiVirus software. If the user’s system fails the check for current AntiVirus software, the user is provided a download for Norton AntiVirus. Microsoft Windows Patch Failure. If the user’s system fails the check for current critical Operating System patches, the user is instructed to click on the URL for the Microsoft Windows update site and follow the instructions.
20
OIT Services Clean Access How long do the validation checks take? Typically, in pilots to date, the checks take between 15 and 30 seconds. What can you in advance of WCL’s implementation to prepare? Make sure your Operating System is Legal Apply all Microsoft Updates and Patches Apply the latest AntiVirus updates and definitions
21
OIT Services Clean Access Can WCL spy on me through the Agent? No. No information about the user or the content of user files is sent to the server. Do MacIntosh and Linux users also install the Agent? Currently, no clients exist for either Mac or Linux users. The Mac client is expected to be released in January 2006.

OIT Services Clean Access Detailed instructions will be available at: http://www.wcl.american.edu/techres The Office of Technology will give ample notice before implementation.
