IHS Special Diabetes Program Competitive Grants Part 2: Refining Idea Maps Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Planning Cynthia C. Phillips, Ph.D. Lisa Wyatt Knowlton, Ed.D. Evaluation Training ̶ January 2005

Part 2: Overview  Why?  Introduction to Thinking More Strategically  Idea Map Refining Basics  “Hands-on” Idea Map Revision Exercise

Avoiding Potential Pitfalls  Blind Spots  Lack of Knowledge is the Problem  Access = Action or Knowing = Doing  Treatment Trickle (too little of too much)  Activities = Outcomes

Idea Maps Are…  One of many ways to show how you think your program will work (strategy)  A picture of how a group “sees things,” they are not the absolute truth  Usually improved over time  Like any model/theory, only as good as its last test

What is a Strategy?  The full allocation of resources in an all out effort to achieve an overwhelming impact on a clearly defined outcome.  What can we do to help further refine our thinking about our programs?  How can idea maps help us do this?  What is the connection to evaluation?

Taking A Closer Look…

Connecting Strategy to Results RECRUITMENT STRATEGIES RECRUITS Possible Recruits

Start with Outcomes  Outcomes are likely to result from activities  Outcomes address awareness, attitudes, knowledge, skills and behaviors  Outcomes are SMART  Outcomes are written as change statements (increase, decrease etc)  Outcomes are achievable within the required funding and reporting periods

Activities and Outputs  Major activities needed to implement the program are listed (the intervention)  The duration and intensity of the intervention are well defined and quantified  The duration and intensity of the intervention are appropriate for the type of participant targeted  Targeted participants and participation rates are described and quantified

Resources and Impact  Major resources needed to operate the program are listed  All activities have sufficient and appropriate resources  Impact is not beyond the scope or influence of the program

Revising Your Idea Map  Present your idea map to another team  Ask them to apply the checklist to it  Switch  Edit your idea map as needed
