2 10/2/2007 Introduction Elaine Nowak Product Manager MAIS 647-6903 enowak@umich.edu

3 10/2/2007 UM Environment Endowed, EF student support managed at departmental level. No central tracking of available funds. Some funds have been around 100+ years. Some funds have small balances producing small awards, infrequent awards
4
4 10/2/2007 UM Environment Student selection criteria may be complex, out-dated. Locating eligible students time-consuming. Cost/benefit for tiny awards? Some funds require student action (thank you letter) that increases administrative work
5
5 10/2/2007 UM Environment Fund may earn much more but University limits spending to 5% (saving for rainy day approach?) Short window to make student selections before aid needs to be disbursed for fall Too much work!
6
6 10/2/2007 Are EF/Endowed Funds Important? Non-sponsored EF gifts (Fund Code = 30000) accounted for $55M in student aid for Aid Year 2007 By comparison, general fund (OFA, Rackham) = $90M Supported 9,799 students (almost 25% of student body) Offset 15% of student tuition charges
7
7 10/2/2007 The Big Questions… How much remains un-awarded each year? Can EF funds help control college costs? Can EF funds effectively recruit and retain the best, brightest and neediest?
8
8 10/2/2007 Departmental View How Engineering tackled this…
9
9 10/2/2007 What if…. State or federal mandate to spend X% of endowed/restricted funds each year on student support? How would we define and track the total pool? How would we manage compliance?

10 10/2/2007 Scholarship Match Tool U-M bolt-on to HE M-Pathways Powerful functionality utilizing existing student data to accomplish match Integrates well with Award Load Can extend match by supplying locally collected/maintained data
11
11 10/2/2007 Scholarship Match Tool Collaborative effort with Engineering, Business, MAIS Outstanding pilots! Implemented Summer 2006 Enhancement to load local data added in 2007
12
12 10/2/2007 Scholarship Match Tool Requires significant initial investment to define and configure each scholarship’s selection criteria Requires comfort with equation writing, good knowledge of student data Older funds may not have a clear way to define criteria (“of sound mind”)
13
13 10/2/2007 Scholarship Match Tool Difficulty adding new users due to time commitment to set up criteria Initially expected to add OFA, Law, Undergrad LSA, Public Health, Rackham in 2007 Law and Rackham still involved but going is slow… Need new approach post-HE upgrade.
