The Technical Stuff Transubstantiation –CCC 1376. The Council of Trent summarizes the Catholic faith by declaring: "Because Christ our Redeemer said that it was truly his body that he was offering under the species of bread, it has always been the conviction of the Church of God, and this holy Council now declares again, that by the consecration of the bread and wine there takes place a change of the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the body of Christ our Lord and of the whole substance of the wine into the substance of his blood. This change the holy Catholic Church has fittingly and properly called transubstantiation."

The Technical Stuff What does this mean? * Accidents: the appearance, taste, look and feel of an object; everything that we physically sense about an object. ie. the material and form of bread and wine * Substance: what it really is. ie. Eucharistic species: the body and blood of Christ We, in turn, undergo through the receiving of the Eucharist, a change of our spiritual substance; we are united with Christ.

The Technical Stuff Real Presence CCC 1374 The mode of Christ's presence under the Eucharistic species is unique. It raises the Eucharist above all the sacraments as "the perfection of the spiritual life and the end to which all the sacraments tend." In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist "the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained.” "This presence is called 'real' - by which is not intended to exclude the other types of presence as if they could not be 'real' too, but because it is presence in the fullest sense: that is to say, it is a substantial presence by which Christ, God and man, makes himself wholly and entirely present."

The Technical Stuff The Eucharist. The source and summit of Christian life. –1324 The Eucharist is "the source and summit of the Christian life.“ "The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch." –1325 "The Eucharist is the efficacious sign and sublime cause of that communion in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which the Church is kept in being. It is the culmination both of God's action sanctifying the world in Christ and of the worship men offer to Christ and through him to the Father in the Holy Spirit."

The Technical Stuff –1326 Finally, by the Eucharistic celebration we already unite ourselves with the heavenly liturgy and anticipate eternal life, when God will be all in all. –1327 In brief, the Eucharist is the sum and summary of our faith: "Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist, and the Eucharist in turn confirms our way of thinking."
10
The Technical Stuff What does this mean? –The Eucharist is the experience with Christ our Saviour. We are born anew, sanctified, made holy again. –We give praise and thanks for our second chance, that God has not forsaken us, that he loves us to be present for us. –We have a foretaste of heaven when we will be united with all God’s people; we experience this every time we partake in the Eucharist, when we join with all God’s people who are with us, and who are with us spiritually. –The Eucharist is the anticipation and celebration for Christ in our lives and in our life to come.
