1 Are ice out dates of freshwater lakes in Maine changing? Data source: http://maine.water.usgs.gov/iceout.html Researcher’s name Evidence (graph, table…something that tells the story clearly and at a glance) title Labels and units legend caption

2 Reasoning: Ice out dates appear to be occurring earlier over the last century. Eagle Lake 47.02 degrees North West Grand 45.02 degrees North Swan Lake 44.32 degrees North West Grand Lake New question raised: Are changes occurring more rapidly in northern lakes?

3 Are winters in Maine getting warmer? Data source: USGS http://me.water.usgs.gov/iceout_data, October 2007 http://me.water.usgs.gov/iceout_data Lucia Mello

4 Reasoning: Spring seems to be coming earlier to eastern Maine than It used to. The trend line indicates that ice has been going out on West Grand Lake goes out around 9 days earlier in spring now, than it did in 1875. Earlier ice out doesn’t mean that the spring is warmer, only that warm weather comes earlier. Or the ice could be thinner. West Grand Lake New question raised: Are spring temperatures actually getting warmer? Does this trend happen in all Maine Lakes?
