Fundamental Properties of GRB-Selected Galaxies: A Swift/VLT Legacy Survey Palli Jakobsson Centre for Astrophysics Research (University of Hertfordshire)

Main Collaborators Jens Hjorth (DARK, NBI) [PI] Johan Fynbo (DARK, NBI) Javier Gorosabel (IAA-CSIC, Granada) Nial Tanvir (CAR, Herts) Andrew Levan (CAR, Herts) Paul Vreeswijk (ESO) Rhaana Starling (Amsterdam) Gulli Björnsson (Science Institute, Reykjavík) Cedric Ledoux (ESO) Evert Rol (Leicester) Andreas Jaunsen (Oslo)

Concrete Goals (LP: 272 hours) Identify the GRB hosts: R = 27 and K = 21.5 [17]. Measure redshifts for GRBs without absorption redshifts [4]. Search for the Ly α line when possible [7]. Determine the dust reddening within hosts. Detailed studies (spectroscopy) of particularly interesting targets: short GRB hosts [3] and bright hosts [1]. Determine the luminosity function.

Redshift Distribution of Swift GRBs Jakobsson et al. (2006)

Sample Definition GRBs detected by Swift after 1 March 2005, when it was fully operational and automatically slewing. An X-ray position is available obtained by the Swift XRT detector. The Galactic extinction is less than A V < 0.5. Declination favorable for VLT (< +25º).
