All planets have an atmosphere The Sun’s atmosphere is made up of hydrogen. The Earth’s atmosphere is made up of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, ozone and other gases.

Layers of Atmosphere Troposphere: contains water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and others. associate with weather. extend up to 10 miles above Earth’s surface. Stratrosphere: includes the ozone layer. ozone molecules absorb ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. extend about 10 to 30 miles above Earth’s surface. Mesosphere: the coldest part of the atmosphere. extend up to 30 to 50 miles above Earth’s surface. Thermosphere: Temperatures can reach up to several thousand degrees Fahrenheit. extend about 50 to 180 miles above Earth’s surface. Exosphere Exosphere: the outermost layer of the atmosphere. the transition zone into space. extend to 500 miles above Earth’s surface.
