Ae105c PDR, May 7, 2008 p. 2 Task Overview Design and set up experiments Collect, process, and publish data Focus on o Geometry and mass measurements o Material properties measurements o Static tests o Dynamic tests o Thermal tests
3
Ae105c PDR, May 7, 2008 p. 3 Assumptions All tests must be non destructive Longerons and battens are made of the same material Impossible to test longeron material properties Battens Cross section – rounded rectangle Always in compression Diagonals Cross section - circle Always in tension
4
Ae105c PDR, May 7, 2008 p. 4 4 Baseline Approach Perform tests to determine material properties as well as static, dynamic, and thermal responses Measure geometry with rulers, calibers, etc and mass with a scale Collect stress-strain data on boom elements Strap canister horizontally and firmly to create fixed boundary condition Use laser displacement sensors, force shaker, and thermal lamps Process data into engineering units (length, time, etc) and publish to wiki for use by other teams

Ae105c PDR, May 7, 2008 p. 5 5 Technical Status Mass and geometry measurements complete Material property measurements complete Mount for static condition complete o redone with ratchet tightener Static force-displacement test complete Concerned boundary condition might not be stiff enough for dynamic testing Data, results, and pictures are posted on the wiki

Ae105c PDR, May 7, 2008 p. 10 Conclusions Creep exists as evident in static test results – Likely due to joint creep, especially in the boom-canister interface Further investigation is required to determine quality of boundary condition
11
Ae105c PDR, May 7, 2008 p. 11 Dynamic Test The dynamic tests will measure the boom’s response to a known input A shaker will be mounted beneath the boom to displace it vertically Laser displacement measurement units will measure the vertical displacement from above

Ae105c PDR, May 7, 2008 p. 13 13 Open Issues and Concerns Canister mount is imperfect o May not be adequate for dynamic testing o Ideally would be able to bolt pipes into floor o How much separation is required in frequency space? Performing comprehensive thermal testing with four weeks is aggressive. Thermal test configuration requires better definition
14
Ae105c PDR, May 7, 2008 p. 14 Summary Mass, geometry, material properties determined Static test complete Dynamic test preparations underway Thermal tests will be completed schedule permitting Experimental set up issues, which have previously delayed progress, have been addressed Experiments now running smoothly
