When an Emergency Occurs Who is the first responder and what are his/her responsibilities? First person to reach the scene of an emergency and to initiate care or assistance for the victim(s)

First Responder Responsibilities Assess the situation, including the victim’s condition Render emergency care if appropriately trained Activate the emergency medical system

Good Samaritan Laws Protection from legal liability for those people who attempted to aid victims of an emergency, provided: He/she acted in a reasonable and prudent manner Did not charge for services rendered Did not intentionally or willfully increase victims’ injuries

General Guidelines If in doubt, stop and render assistance Some occupations must help, e.g. police, EMT’s, nurses, sometimes teachers Stay with victim until a more qualified person arrives at the scene Attempt only emergency procedures that you know

General Guidelines Never force treatment upon someone, unless a life-threatening situation, e.g. severe bleeding or poisoning Implied Consent - render first aid to someone unconscious

EMT - Emergency Medical Technician EMT - emergency specialist trained to provide life-sustaining care and transportation for patients outside of the hospital

EMT’s are trained to provide: CPR Patient assessment Mechanical aids used in treating breathing difficulties Splinting Bandaging Patient transport

Paramedics Paramedics - emergency personnel qualified to deliver advanced support

Paramedics are trained to provide Defibrillation Endotracheal intubation Administration of appropriate medications Cardiac monitoring Intravenous therapy

Making an Emergency Call Your name and location of the incident Describe the problem: # of people involved your assessment of the situation any treatment you provided Telephone number of where you are calling Don’t hang up until emergency personnel do
