2 Introductions…A Recap Relate the topic directly to the audience State the importance of the topic Startle the audience Arouse the curiosity of the audience Question the audience Begin with a quotation Tell a story

3 The Persuasive Approach Same attention-grabbing devices apply. Same interest-generating devices apply. Hit people over the head with why they should listen. Every word, especially the opening line is paramount! Needs to have universal appeal. Audience becomes engaged… then makes their decisions.

5 From a universal opening… … a persuasive speech can take any possible road. Audience is either: Interested Interested Not interested Not interested On the fence On the fence Uncaring Uncaring But their interest will be piqued enough to listen!

6 The Persuasive Closure Same devices can be used as with introductions. Must directly reinforce what the audience must do. Must provide universal appeal. Must emit a “can do” feeling. Simplify the desired action. Must be definitive. “I need your vote!”
