Expanding NVODS to capture local municipal monitoring data in Southern California Larry Cooper SCCWRP

Federal Government3.1 $M Local Government1.2 $M NPDES24 $M Private Party.4 $M State Government.5 $M University1.9 $M Total31.2 $M Background NVODS needs to entrain non-research data providers SCCWRP is well positioned to help SCCWRP is a research consortium formed by local data generators Most monitoring in Southern California is non-Federal Estimated annual costs for monitoring in the Southern California Bight

Steps in the project  Implement an OpenDAP server  Develop a client for the server and our target user group  Technology transfer to our target user group

Step 1: Implement Sever  Easy to do since technology is well established  We used Tomcat (a SQL flavor of server)  Runs against PostGRES relational database  This step has been completed http://www.sccwrp.org:8080/dods/sccwrp/testdb.html  Special thanks to Nathan Potter for technical support

Data Sets  CTD cast data –Temperature –Depth –Conductivity –Dissolved Oxygen –Transmissivity

Step 2: Developing Client Software  A little more challenging  Find a client or make a client? –We chose to adapt an existing software package –Environmental Analysis System (EASy) developed by University of Southern California

EASy Client  Advantages –Functionality already established –Uses Point Data –Development Platform is familiar (C++) –Can be run as desktop application or Browser Interface  The client is in the Beta Test Mode

Step 3: Technology Transfer  Most challenging step  Differences in philosophy among data producing groups about data sharing –Some groups want to share their data –Some groups want to implement an approval process before sharing  Software Compatibility issues. –Problems with operating system versions

Target Participants  Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts  City of Los Angeles Environmental Monitoring Division  County Sanitation Districts of Orange County  San Diego Metropolitan Waste Water Districts

Future Steps  Expand to similar data from academic institutions: SCRIPPS and CALCOFI  Expand to data from UCLA data buoy –live streaming data
