Joseph Rosser Digital Audio Workstations: A Revolution in Sound Joseph Rosser Comm 115
2
Joseph Rosser I decided on this topic because… Music has always been a top priority in my life My band uses a digital audio workstation to record and edit our own music The creation of these home recording studios has made more music available to more listeners
3
Joseph Rosser This is what I had found… DAW’s are extremely cheap DAW’s are extremely accessible Many indie/experimental bands refuse to deal with corporate record labels, therefore release material recorded with DAW’s DAW’s have completely changed the recording industry
4
Joseph Rosser What is a DAW? A Digital Audio Workstation takes sound waves, converts them to a digital file through processing by a sound card in a computer, and then stored in a hard drive for later use. DAW’s have many components that make the process work Software Mixing Board Microphones Cables Snake Sound card Computer http://photography.alantmiller.com/pix/06_objects_mixing_board_jpg.jpg http://www.elderly.com/images/new_instruments/MIK/PG58_microphone.jpg

Joseph Rosser Effects on the Industry (In Corporate Eyes) From the corporate view DAW’s have interrupted a pre-established, fine tuned system The DAW almost completely bypasses the need for a record label, except for the mass distribution of music, which can sometimes be done without labels More access to technology=less money for the bigwigs and paper pushers
6
Joseph Rosser Everyone is doing it The DAW has almost taken over the indie music scene Artists as well known as Wilco and Godspeed You! Black Emperor and more seldom known such as Wolf Eyes or Nautical Almanac have used DAW’s http://www.artistdirect.com/Images/artd/amg/music/bio/514110_wilco_200x200.jpg http://www.petermanson.com/wolf3.jpg

Joseph Rosser I say… I am glad that technology has made music more available to people The artist should be in control of their sound, not a man wearing a suit in a 60 th floor suite This also adds a higher level of creativity to the music, making it much better and much more enjoyable
8
Joseph Rosser To sum it up DAW’s provide a simple way to accomplish the complex task of recording and editing music. DAW’s make music much more available and affordable Record labels do not agree with the use of DAW’s privately Many newer artists use DAW’s to aid them in the creative process
