2 3 Stages of Stress Reaction 1) Alarm – fight or flight reflex; senses heighten; you become hyperaware 2) Resistance – superficial coping; rationalization 3) Exhaustion – tiredness, disorientation, delusions

3 Psychological Reactions Anxiety – feeling of an imminent, but unclear threat Frustration – when progress towards a goal is blocked Anger – directly results from frustration Fear – stressor that involves real danger

4 Behavioral Reactions Nervous Habits – nail biting, tapping, twiddling, trembling, blinking, gulping meals, teeth chattering, etc. Escape – psychologically or physically leaving a stressful situation (can lead to unemployment, alcoholism, suicide)

5 Physical Reactions Stress can lead to: arthritis, asthma –Peptic ulcers, hypertension, arthritis, asthma, hearth disease

6 Coping Biofeedback – focusing the mind on the body
