The Joy of Starbucks One of the most remarkable business success stories, starbucks has managed to secure a place in the food culture of not just this country but the world over.

Amazing Facts and Figures o Starbucks averages over 1.4 billion dollars in revenue annually o 70% of this revenue comes from sales of coffee 2135 stores-----1.50 per cup-----468,000 in coffee sales per store---------312,000 cups per year------854 cups per day per store o The international average cost for "green coffee," which means unroasted raw coffee, has been on the decline in recent years. The average was $1.09 per pound in 1998 and 86 cents in 1999, and currently is down to 76 cents per pound. Assuming that 1 pound of coffee makes around 40 12-ounce cups, the raw cost of a $1.50 cup of 12-ounce coffee is currently around 2 cents. o one might think that Starbucks would be rolling in cash. Fiscal year 1999 was a good year for the company, with $1.7 billion in total revenues. But the company reported a profit of only $102 million. Rent, wages and corporate overhead expenses are the company's main costs. So with every sip, Starbucks customers are paying for their surroundings and service more than for the coffee itself.

o It turns out that Starbucks got its name from the coffee-loving first mate in Melville's classic tale of pursuit and revenge, Moby Dick Starbucks, an Amazing History The first 20 years: o 1971Starbucks opens its first location in Seattle's Pike Place Market. o 1982Howard Schultz joins Starbucks as director of retail operations and marketing. Starbucks begins providing coffee to fine restaurants and espresso bars. o 1983Schultz travels to Italy, where he's impressed with the popularity of espresso bars in Milan. He sees the potential in Seattle to develop a similar coffee bar culture. o 1984Schultz convinces the founders of Starbucks to test the coffee bar concept in a new location in downtown Seattle. This successful experiment is the genesis for a company that Schultz founds in 1985. Starbucks introduces Christmas Blend.

o1988Starbucks introduces mail order catalog with service to all 50 states. o1989Opens in Portland, Oregon. Store total= 55 o1990Starbucks expands headquarters in Seattle and builds a new roasting plant. Store total = 84 o1991Opens in Los Angeles. Store total =114 at this point eight new starbucks began to open every week. Leading to a total of over 8,000 locations as of January 2004.

Starbucks Beyond the Millennium Today there are over 8,000 Starbucks all over the world and things don’t look like they are slowing down soon. Several new Starbucks still open every week. With the vast Chinese and Indian markets still to be tapped the future looks bright for this American Phenomenon.
