Spectrometer Solenoid Procurement UpdatePage 5 S. Virostek, M. Green (LBNL) --- W. Lau, S. Yang (Oxford) Spec completed, reviewed by collaboration and provided to LBNL procurement mid-March LBNL Purchasing reviewed and evaluated the specification and wrote the Request for Proposal Build-to-spec bid request package including the solenoid specification went out on April 10th Quotes requested from 7 qualified vendors Bid response requested 5 weeks from RFQ release 5 bid packages received on May 15th (2 no bids) Recent Progress (March – June)

Spectrometer Solenoid Procurement UpdatePage 6 S. Virostek, M. Green (LBNL) --- W. Lau, S. Yang (Oxford) Several week evaluation period included analysis by LBNL (Eng. & Purch.) and questions for vendors Bid review process at LBNL is nearly complete Selected vendor’s bid package has been reviewed by an invited group at this collaboration meeting Contract award expected before the end of June Other: Superconductor material arrived at LBNL May 5 th Magnet design change request submitted May 9 th Recent Progress (continued)

Spectrometer Solenoid Procurement UpdatePage 7 S. Virostek, M. Green (LBNL) --- W. Lau, S. Yang (Oxford) General system description Applicable codes and standards Detailed fabrication requirements Inspection and acceptance requirements Packing, shipping and handling requirements Notification Requirements List of government furnished materials Quality assurance requirements Conceptual design drawings Attachments (conductor spec, procedures, TRD) Procurement Specification Content

Spectrometer Solenoid Procurement UpdatePage 8 S. Virostek, M. Green (LBNL) --- W. Lau, S. Yang (Oxford) Material supplied by Outokumpu arrived on May 5 th Length of the delivered conductor: 121.49 km Nominal dims of insulated conductor: 1.00 x 1.65 mm Nominal copper to superconductor ratio: 3.9 ± 0.4 Number of filaments in the conductor matrix: ~222 Nominal filament diameter: ~41 microns Nominal conductor twist pitch: 19 ± 3 mm Material cost for both solenoids: $168k Material to be shipped to vendor after contract award Superconductor Details

Spectrometer Solenoid Procurement UpdatePage 9 S. Virostek, M. Green (LBNL) --- W. Lau, S. Yang (Oxford) Conductor Cross-section 1.00 mm 1.65 mm 41 mm Nb-Ti Filament RRR = 70 Copper

Spectrometer Solenoid Procurement UpdatePage 10 S. Virostek, M. Green (LBNL) --- W. Lau, S. Yang (Oxford) Conductor Mechanical Characteristics Both tests look for filament breakup and defects in the filament bundle The dimensions are acceptable

Spectrometer Solenoid Procurement UpdatePage 11 S. Virostek, M. Green (LBNL) --- W. Lau, S. Yang (Oxford) Conductor Electrical Characteristics Specified conductor critical current: >760 @ 4.2 K and 5 T Specified conductor n value: >35 Specified conductor copper to S/C ratio: 3.9 ± 0.4 RRR values for the conductor copper are acceptable

Spectrometer Solenoid Procurement UpdatePage 12 S. Virostek, M. Green (LBNL) --- W. Lau, S. Yang (Oxford) Typical OKAS Short Sample Test Plot

Spectrometer Solenoid Procurement UpdatePage 13 S. Virostek, M. Green (LBNL) --- W. Lau, S. Yang (Oxford) Critical Current vs. Magnetic Induction

Spectrometer Solenoid Procurement UpdatePage 14 S. Virostek, M. Green (LBNL) --- W. Lau, S. Yang (Oxford) Spooling of the Conductor

Spectrometer Solenoid Procurement UpdatePage 15 S. Virostek, M. Green (LBNL) --- W. Lau, S. Yang (Oxford) LBNL Inspection of the Superconductor 3 crates received containing six conductor spools All spools of conductor were visually inspected and found to be in good condition w/no shifting A sample was cut from one of the smaller rolls (a small roll is more likely to have defects) The surface of the insulation from a 1 meter long section was visually inspected. The twist pitch was observed to be ~19 mm The conductor copper was removed using nitric acid to allow the Nb-Ti filaments to be inspected

Spectrometer Solenoid Procurement UpdatePage 16 S. Virostek, M. Green (LBNL) --- W. Lau, S. Yang (Oxford) Exposed Conductor Filaments The conductor twist pitch is within the specified range of values ~2.5 mm

Spectrometer Solenoid Procurement UpdatePage 17 S. Virostek, M. Green (LBNL) --- W. Lau, S. Yang (Oxford) A Closer Look at the Filaments No filament sausaging observed, suggesting a high n value Filament surfaces appear to be acceptable j c likely to be uniform across the conductor section

Spectrometer Solenoid Procurement UpdatePage 18 S. Virostek, M. Green (LBNL) --- W. Lau, S. Yang (Oxford) Superconductor material accepted by LBNL RFQ’s sent to 7 magnet vendors 5 bid packages received by LBNL May 15 th Final vendor selection nearly complete Procurement contract expected to be placed before the end of June Summary
