1
Floods “Hey, there’s too much water?”
2
WHAT IS A FLOOD? “Floods are high water flow or an overflow of rivers or streams.” “Floods are the most frequent and costly natural disasters.” Drew, the Meteorologist says: Floods are EVIL!
3
Where do floods occur? A flood can happen anywhere, along the Mississippi, in New England, the western states, or here in New Jersey! Come on now! There is water everywhere? My skin’s getting wrinkly!
4
What is the number one weather related killer, you ask?
6
What are FLOOD producing conditions? Miss Moak is such a benevolent teacher!
7
Melting Snow Severe Thunderstorms Heavy rain in spring or summer Tropical Cyclones No more water PLEASE!
8
Let’s talk about elements of FLOODING. Two elements of flooding are rainfall intensity and rainfall duration.
9
I choose you! Jordyn & Shawn… I CHOOSE YOU!
10
What are the MAIN two elements of Flooding again?
11
What is Intensity and Duration? Intensity is the RATE of rainfall Duration is how LONG the rain lasts.
12
More Facts on FLOODS Hey, what is a Floodplain? Floods can be slow-rising or fast-rising, but usually they develop over periods of hours or days.
13
A floodplain is an area of land that has more of a chance of FLOODING. Miss Bijas says………
14
I want to know what flash floods are!!
15
Dennis the Meteorologist says: “Flash floods often occur when heavy rains continue to fall over several hours, taking soil past its saturation point, or after a dam or levee failure, or following a sudden release of water held by an ice or debris jam.” Me, me! Pick me!
16
Brad the Meteorologist says: “Saturated means that the area can not possibly hold anymore water. It is holding all the water it can possibly hold.” So that’s why my mom told me to stop spraying my little sister with the hose!
17
IT POURED! This looks beyond saturated!!
18
Shannon the Meteorologist says: Hurricane Floyd produced torrential downpours and flooding across New Jersey. The heavy rains were something that the residents of Somerset County, NJ were not looking forward to. When the rains were finally over the rivers flooded the region.
19
Chris says… “OH Shannon! Don’t go scaring the kids with all your extreme weather facts!”
20
Let’s see what other damage Hurricane Floyd produced! Waah! I’m scared! I really hate getting wet!
21
Hurricane Floyd Damage In a 12 hour period, what was left of Hurricane Floyd dumped anywhere from 8 to 12 inches of rain over central Jersey. The Raritan River rose to 42 feet which is 14 feet above flood stage Bound Brooke was the hardest hit of all the towns in Central Jersey, the town was virtually put underwater.
22
Katie & Hannah, I choose you!
23
Now dear, maybe we should give them a hint.
24
NORTH AMERICA Look, there I live on it! Phew I am relieved! I am not from home.
25
So what else happened? Trips from route 22 to route 28 took almost an hour when it normally took a few minutes! Shh! Quiet! I’m trying to learn!
26
What happens if there is a flood warning?? Stay tuned to the radio or TV, evacuate if told to do so and seek higher ground. Wait, I’m confused! Should we do that now?
27
Let’s clarify the differences between Flood watches and warnings!
28
Flood watch vs. Flood warnings Flood watch: Flooding is possible in and around the watch area. Flood warning: Flooding is happening and you should evacuate immediately! Seconds could be the difference between life and death.
29
Miss Moak the teacher says: “I can feel us getting near the end so let’s have a final review”
30
What is a Flood? Miss Moak’s class, get ready… Ooo! Can I call on someone? Hey, where’d he come from?
31
Michael & John, you’re up! Excellent! Watch out Patrick & Bradley, you’re on deck!
32
What is a floodplain? Um, is that a trick question? (Get ready Shannon & Nicky)
33
SUPERB! Last question… Ryan & Dennis what is intensity and duration?
34
Fantastic job everyone! You are now FLOOD Experts! That’s all folks!
