Dizi (Chinese Bamboo Flute) wind instrument Phi Yen’s Music Project

The Dizi has a very simple structure: 1 blowhole, 1 membrane hole, 6 finger holes, and two pairs of holes in the end to correct the pitch and hang decorative tassels.

Dizi History Emperor Wudi’s messenger, Zhang Qian, brought Dizi back from somewhere west of China in 119 BC.

The common about the Dizi is the membrane hole, which is located above the blowhole. Liu Xi invented the membrane hole in the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD); he named the flute the "Seven Star Tube". What makes the membrane hole special is its thin membrane covering. Some people mistake this membrane for rice paper, but it is actually made from the inner tube of a bamboo, cork, or reed plant.

When the Dizi is play, the membrane vibrates with the Dizi, producing a sweet, bright tone. In addition to deliver sound far away, you can also adjust the membrane to get just the "right" tone for the specific musical mood.

What Unique About Dizi Because it sounds great, is easy to learn, light to carry and inexpensive, Dizi is one of most popular Chinese instruments in Asia.
