OntoNotes Shallow Semantics Techniques (BBN, Colorado, ISI): Goal: In 4 years, manually annotate 1 mill words of English, Chinese, and Arabic text Make sure annotators agree 90%+ to ensure sense stability and distinguishability Results: Syntactic structure Predicate/argument structure for verbs and eventive nouns Manually disambiguated senses for nouns and verbs Manually inserted coreference links Ontology of groups of synonymous senses

OntoNotes Utility Applications: Distillation ( IR+Compaction/summarization ), possibly MT Capabilities beyond IR/keyword matching: IR: query expansion using sense-groups’ words Compaction/summarization: Using sense-group paraphrases to recognize paraphrase MT: WSD for appropriate translation choice and coref links for appropriate translation For discussion: What other applications would benefit from PropBank/Ontonotes? How would one map PropBank/OntoNotes Analysis into a functionality for different applications? How useful is WSD in general? How does one apply ontology organization of sense-groups / concepts?
