Erosion Lenya Dussel Topic # 1044

What is erosion Erosion: The group of natural processes, including weathering, dissolution, abrasion, corrosion, and transportation, by which material is worn away from the earth's surface. Geological erosion occurs where soil is in its natural environment surrounded by its natural vegetation. A classical example of the results of geological erosion is the Grand Canyon. Accelerated erosion can be caused by man's activities, such as agriculture and construction, which alter the natural state of the environment.

Wind Erosion Occurring mostly in flat, dry areas and moist sandy soils along bodies of water, wind erosion removes soil and natural vegetation, and causes dryness and deterioration of soil structure.

Wind Erosion (cont) All mucks, sands, and loamy sands can easily be detached and blown away by the wind, and thus are rated a severe hazard.

Water Erosion Raindrops can be a major problem for farmers when they strike bare soil. With an impact of up to 30 mph, rain washes out seed and splashes soil into the air. http://abe.www.ecn.purdu e.edu/

Water Erosion (cont) If the fields are on a slope the soil is splashed downhill which causes deterioration of soil structure. ltpwww.gsfc.nasa.gov/glo be/ stories/erosion.htm
