1 Virtual Tour of a Dairy Farm and the Milking Process Ms. Alessandra Welsh 2 nd Grade Neverland Elementary

2 Theme: Rural Communities  One aspect that is unique to rural communities is the amount of land for farming. There are many different types of farms that have different products and purposes. All of these farms contribute in different ways to the community.  Today I will be taking you on a virtual tour to visit some dairy farms to learn their main contribution to their community.

4 Introduction  Ever wonder when your eating your cereal in the morning or drinking a glass of milk, where that milk actually comes from?  You may think that it comes from a grocery store, which is true but… it actually comes from someplace else before that.

5 Where does milk come from? Milk comes from a cow after she has a calf. See a calf being born See a calf being born

6 Milking Process Milk is held in the cows udder and the baby calf feeds on the milk which is called Colostrum. After the baby calf is weaned from the mothers milk the mother cow continues to produce milk. Can you find the udder? Can you find the udder? What other parts does a dairy cow have? Make a list

7 Milking Parlor  The cows are brought into a special parlor where they are milked. View a milking parlor

8 Activity! Now it’s your chance to learn how to milk! Follow the directions in the activity to experience what milking a cow is like. Lets learn to milk! Lets learn to milk!

9 Storage  The raw milk is then stored in special Containers to keep the milk cold until they are picked up by special refrigerated trucks. Learn about these trucks

10 Where do those trucks go? The trucks take the milk to a plant where they make sure the milk is safe for us to drink. Visit a Processing Plant Visit a Processing Plant

11 Now you can bring the milk home!  After the milk has been tested and processed it is shipped to grocery stores all over.

12 Other Milk Products  Once the milk is made it can be a key ingredient for many other products that we eat. Cheese Cheese Yogurt Yogurt Ice cream Ice cream Learn how cheese Learn how cheese is made is made

13 From Cow to Carton Cow has calf and can produce milk Cows are milked in the milking parlor Refrigerated trucks take the milk to plants Plants test the milk for safety Milk is placed in cartons and shipped to a grocery store near you!

14 Follow up Activity Using the information on this virtual field trip, create your own picture book on the story of milk. Include: -Each step in the milk process. How the milk goes from cow to carton -For each step include a description and a illustration -The last page should include your favorite dairy product -Be sure to design a cover for your book!
