1 Research Skills- Summer Term Practical classes run in weeks 2,3,4 (& 5 for those of you who miss a class on Mon wk 4 due to the Bank Holiday…)

2 What to expect… 1st Practical : –Structure of exam –Flow Chart –Section 1 of the Mock Exam 2nd Practical: - Sections 3 & 4 of the Mock Exam 3rd Practical: Sections 2 & 5 of the Mock Exam Q & A/ Problem sheets

3 By the end of this class you should… –Know about the structure of the RS exam –Understand how to use the flow chart & just how useful it is… –Have run through Part 1 of the mock exam (multiple choice section) & obtained/understand how to obtain the correct answers

4 RS Exam 5 parts Open book (take in all formulae/tables/handouts/books/flow chart/worked examples, etc) Know by hand how to do (for section 2): both types of t-test; Mann-Whitney; Wilcoxon; Friedman's; Kruskal-Wallis; Pearson's correlation; Spearman's correlation; and Chi- Squared.

5 The 5 Sections… Section 1: Multiple choice Section 2: Perform the test –Choose which test is appropriate and perform by hand Section 3: Which Test? Section 4: Choose appropriate test and correct conclusion Section 5: Interpreting data –Graph & describe data

6 The Flow Chart (and why we love it…) See Graham’s website…

7 Mock Exam Now it’s time to go through Section 1- Multiple Choice…

8 Hopefully by now you… –Know about the structure of the RS exam –Understand how to use the flow chart & why it will be your new best friend during the exam… –Have run through Part 1 of the mock exam (multiple choice section) & obtained/understand how to obtain the correct answers
