6 Reading Issues Our country is moving away from reading to video based entertainment Many students speak a language other than English for their first language Learning Style affects “fondness” for reading Learning by doing –kinesthetic learners prefer to “do” instead of read

7 Reading Hints Keep track of what you are reading, its important to cite sources correctly Divide reading into “chunks” so you can read when you have time Realize some topics will be easier than others Read all with a critical eye

8 Readings Sessions Plan time that has little or not distractions Distractions can be external—kids and television Distractions can be internal—ideas that take your attention away from readings Many students get up earlier—before their family to read

9 Reading strategies Read in a comfortable place Plan a regular time to read if possible Have a dictionary available May find it helpful to listen to soothing music

10 Build Comprehension The more you read the greater your skill in reading Know the purpose or why you are reading Course objectives Objectives of a lesson Ask yourself—why do you need to know this particular information?

11 Reading Speed Read groups of words May or may not want to use your finger to point to words Avoid thinking about each word (subvocalization) Rephrase reading in your own words

12 Reading Purpose Evaluate what you are reading—knowing what the purpose is Textbooks are made for general audiences, each course has specific requirements, not everything in a text will be used in a class Understand the purpose of your reading Always relate back to the course objectives

14 Preview or skim chapter Look for chapter elements Introduction, summary First and last lines of every paragraph Certain terms BOLD Italicized Tables and Diagrams Table of contents

15 Question Write questions in the margin or on removable notes (if you want to sell your book back) Questions such as What support does the author give for specific information? Information that is not complete—where you want to know more

16 Read Answer questions you asked in the margins of the paper Answer questions related to course objectives, assignments as you read Use marker to highlight key concepts Watch over highlighting Remember to read in segments so the content can be digested properly

17 Recite Can recite answers to the questions your raised Write out answers to your questions and the questions posed by study group members and instructors Repeat the cycle: Question-read-recite

18 Review Read your notes from reading, take them with you on breaks at work Create outlines from reading to keep with you Flashcards can be used for reinforce key concepts Find examples for key concepts from reading to reinforce content

19 Summarizing Construct summaries of what you are reading Find the key points in an article or textbook, and summarize in your won words Be sure to keep notes of the source of summarized information—helps you with writing your papers—APA citations

20 Critical Reading Strategies Similarity– does the content remind you of anything else you know? Differences-does the content differ from your experience or other readings Cause and Effect—what are the effects of this information? Are the effects supported?
