Journalism E-100 Proseminar in Journalism: Writing and Reporting Instructor: Angelia Herrin July 3, 2008

In the latest sign of troubled economic times, some communities across the Commonwealth are struggling to cobble together the private donations necessary to throw Fourth Of July celebrations A Story About Fireworks

A Story About Moose Maine, the sprawling wilderness that has long lured hunters to shoot animals is being inundated with people who want only to watch them. Now the two worlds aer colliding as hunters lobby the state for more moose hunting permits, to the chagrin of safari operators and some wildlife lovers. The debate, state officials say, highlights the growing difficulty of managing the vast Maine landscape for all the people who want to use it.

Your Story Ideas Here Why am I reading this? What am I reading this now? “The Peg” What does it mean to me? What can I do about it? What’s different now than before? Where’s the conflict? How could this help me?

Your story may not be earth-shaking, but don’t forget the FedEx Envelope story…

Now, about that made up story Jayson Blair Stephen Glass (Rent “Shattered Glass”!) Janet Cooke Steve Tompkins

Don’t Earn These Titles “ The Ghost Writer” The writer turns in another’s work, word-for-word, as his or her own. “The Photocopy ” The writer copies significant portions of text straight from a single source, without alteration.

“The Potluck Paper” The writer tries to disguise plagiarism by copying from several different sources, tweaking the sentences to make them fit together while retaining most of the original phrasing. “The Labor of Laziness” The writer takes the time to paraphrase most of the paper from other sources and make it all fit together, instead of spending the same effort on original work.

WHY PLAGIARISM SUCKS

Sources Everywhere Matchmaking Websites Databases Search engines and directories BUILD YOUR SOURCEBOOK
