Introduction to Motion

Speed How fast something moves The rate of change in position A rate of motion

Types of Speed Instantaneous speed Constant speed Average speed

Speed Assignment: Write a description in your science journal describing the difference between the three “kinds” of speeds. Write a description in your science journal describing the difference between the three “kinds” of speeds.

Calculating Speed v=d/tExample: The world record for the 100m sprint is 9.77 seconds. Express in meters per second how fast the runner is able to run.

Calculating Speed Solution:v=d/t Plug in the numbers… v=100m/ 9.77s v=10.23m/s *please note the units!

Calculating Speed Solve: Sounds travels at a speed of 330m/s. If a firecracker explodes 3630m away, how long does it take for the sound of the explosion to reach you?

Calculating Speed V=330m/s D=3630 m Rearrange to solve for time… t=d/v T=3630m/ 330m/s= 11s It would take 11 seconds for the sound of the explosion to reach you!

Graphing Speed A distance vs. time graph allows us to see the motion of object over a period of time.

Homework Problems Please answer questions 1-3 on page 63. Using a stopwatch and a tape measure, calculate how fast YOU can run!
