Fabrication of a Wireless Sensor Network for Extreme Environments EE 496, Fall 2006 By: Faye Yuen
2
Project Overview Design a network of autonomous motes to: Distinguish between water/ice Collect data on environmental factors to supplement any bio-signs found Detect life in extreme environments Contribute to Dr. Chris McKay’s research Prepare the mote network for use in an upcoming expedition to Antarctica Meet the goals of NASA
3
Approach Program motes to ensure functionality in temperature and humidity sensing (and being able to access that information from a computer) Integrate solar cell modules to recharge battery power source Add sensor to distinguish between water and ice
4
Potential Problems Software/Hardware incompatibilities Unfamiliarity with programming code Getting supplies Making motes durable enough to withstand anticipated conditions in Antarctica TIME MANAGEMENT!!
5
Learning Outcomes Improve programming skills Gain more hands-on experience in a variety of applications (ex. networking, communications, power, sensors) Work with client to meet their needs Complete a large-scale project from beginning to end Improve writing and documentation
6
Deliverable Goals Wireless network with temperature, humidity, and water/ice sensors Renewable energy source (rechargeable batteries and solar modules) Robust and durable motes User-Friendly Documentation
7
Proposed Schedule Gantt Chart
