Objective Why Repositories? Documentation Tools Project/Process Management Tools Configuration Management Tools Requirements Traceability Tools Analysis Tools Design Tools Coding Tools Testing Tools Simulation Tools Reverse Engineering Tools Shared Repository (Data Integration) Vertical Tools Horizontal Tools Common User Interface (Presentation Integration) Virtual Operating Environment (Platform Integration) Control Integration Source: Tony Wasserman Software Reuse is here to stay Repository is a critical component in s/w development/reuse Marketplace is still immature 1) Important: 2) Immature market: Final Output: An evaluation of software reuse repositories

Trend 1: Supergroup tool vendors are starting to dominate. Trend 2: Standards are starting to evolve. Repository Market Trends

Ability to lock in their customers by bundling their free or near-free basic repository into their tool suites: price marketing message Completeness of vision nichevisionaries Ability to execute Microsoft/ Platinum Viasoft IBM Oracle Unisys Softlab Source: GartnerGroup followersleaders

Trend 2: Standard is starting to evolve for storing metadata into the repository. OMG MOF Standards XMI: XML Meta Data Interchange Format Unisys, IBM, Oracle, Platinum, Rational Software,... Microsoft vs

Conclusions: Supergroup tool vendors are probably the way to go. Standards will probably drive proprietary repositories out of the market place. However, in reality, a comprehensive repository solution is yet to come.
