The MarkerWiz What are the pedagogical issues raised by the introduction of computerised marking systems? What are the benefits for student learning and what are the problems?

What Does The MarkerWiz Do? Reduce time spent on repetitive marking. Improve the quality of comments - especially toward the bottom of the pile! Produce an attractive word processed feedback form with detailed comments.

What Does The MarkerWiz Do? Free time for detailed hand-written comments to be made directly on coursework. Gives structured guidance to the assessment process Help with the production of grades.

The Issues Is it acceptable to hand the grading process over to a computer? Does the feedback remain personal?

Evaluation The difficulty of evaluating student response (feedback on feedback?) External examiner comments Staff responses

Evaluation Small scale focus group work on level one and two students: –One size never fits all –Students like conventional feedback – comments in margins –Typewritten responses seen as appropriate (and fair) –Mixed response to grading individual components (some staff also!)

Evaluation - Conclusion Structured feedback on generic aspects welcomed Students feel we could do a lot to improve feedback in general A range of various methods of feedback is expected Computer assistance is essential to deal with massification.
