1 Optical Networking Status of Discussion in the UK Richard Hughes-Jones The University of Manchester Particle Physics Network Coordination Group TERENA Workshop Amsterdam 12 Feb 2002

2 R. Hughes-Jones Manchester Discussion Meeting at the DTI Offices Jan 02 u Presentations given by senior members of  STARLIGHT  NETHERLIGHT u Attendees included:  Many UK network research groups  The e-science directorate  Grid Network Team  UKERNA  SURFnet u There was clear support for developing an optical switching research infrastructure u Keywords: Enthusiasm Collaboration NOT Conflict u A statement of interest has been sent to the Director of e-science

3 TERENA Workshop Amsterdam 12 Feb 2002 R. Hughes-Jones Manchester Some Research Topics Discussed u How to get specific e-science traffic in & out of lambdas u How to deal with lambdas at Internet Exchange Points u How to deal with provisioning when several administrative domains are involved u How to do fine-grain near real time Grid application lambda provisioning u Resilience protection u Multi-hop routing u Multi-hop scheduling of lambdas u Stability u High throughput transports u Keywords: >10Gbit; Testbed Opt sw / X-connects; WAN-MAN u (Many parallels with the present discussions – very welcome)

4 TERENA Workshop Amsterdam 12 Feb 2002 R. Hughes-Jones Manchester Demonstration Projects u Optical projects in other countries include: tele-immersion, multimedia, tele-teaching, distributed tera-computing u Real-time streaming of data from Radio telescopes to the correlator – Jodrell Bank & JIVE [e-Merlin 40Gbit] u High bandwidth visualisation projects u Particle Physics could benefit from piloting the use of switched lambdas on demand for delivery of very large datasets u There is UK involvement in iGrid2002 projects  DataTAG  DataGrid  Radio Astronomy e-correlation
