2 Aims and Objectives To understand the non-technical concerns and values of design students and designers To appreciate the different dimensions in design To have an overview of major design movements and trends

3 Design of the Times Find out the best design since 1880, and present your result

4 Design of the Times Think of a ‘good design’ that came into existence no earlier than 1880 Write down your choice on the worksheet as provided Pass your worksheet to the one next to you On the sheet just passed on to you, repeat the action above until all the four blanks are filled What is good?

5 Design of the Times Pass on the completed sheet to the next one Now you have 4 good designs as perceived by you and your group members Select one from the list, try to think about and write down the reasons why these designs are considered good by the others Why is it good?

6 Design of the Times From the 20 designs, discuss and vote for ONE design  that the entire group agree to be the best among all  that has both engineering and design merits If the chosen item is a product genre, try to identify the most outstanding product in this category

7 Design of the Times Give a brief presentation on your group’s decision  What qualify the design to be good?  What are the priorities of your group’s consideration?  Is it an unanimous result?

10 Dominant beliefs and tastes of the times Shaped by cultural, socio-economic, technological and contingent forces Coupled with thinking and development in literature, art, architecture, philosophy, etc. Unconscious design tendency Conscious adherence for peer and professional recognition Cycles, recurrence, revival

11 Design amidst the Times We will compress the history of modern design into 3 phases Modify your good design to suit the periods Produce poster presentations for your designs

12 Design amidst the Times For the product that your group has just selected, produce a design that fits into the ornamentation period

13 Design amidst the Times For the same product genre, produce another design that fits into the era of modernism

14 Design amidst the Times For the same product genre, produce another design that fits into the era of postmodernism
