Background of Library Automation – 2 Upgrade New System

Why choose Millennium? Support from III CJK support Web enabled and remote access function Most universities in Hong Kong are INNOPAC users Prepare interlibrary collaboration platform Staff recruitment Mature and helpful users community -- HKIUG

Why use Linux? HP/Sun/IBM vs. Linux? Budget constraint Hardware cost Ongoing maintenance cost System stability & extendibility Technical support Hire additional staff for system maintenance?

Hardware configuration INNOPAC Server CPU: Intel Xeon 2.4GHz x 2 RAM: 2GB Harddisk: SCSI Ultra 320 36GB x3 with RAID 5 OS: Redhat Enterprise Linux Version 2.1

Timeline of Migration & Further Development Dec 2003 – Contract Signing Jul 2004 – Hardware Install Aug 2004 – Millennium Install Dec 2004 – Staff Training May 2005 – Soft launch of Millennium Jun 2006 – Upgrade to Release 2005 Oct 2006 – Conduct User Survey for the system

Challenges in Migration MARC Conversion – No export module in Dynix to export MARC records to MARC21 format Data Structure Difference Location codes parameters Communication between III and HKSYC Change of responsibility staff Staff Skill Level Experience grow up in the migration User Adaptability Much afford in users education

Work with Linux Platform The first INNOPAC user in Hong Kong uses Linux platform Highly “Millenniumized” environment Compatibility of Linux OS Chinese Characters (Example 說 vs 説 ) Hardware compatibility

Summary of User Survey To further improve the service, Library conducted a user survey for the Millennium system between 18 Oct – 7 Nov 2006. 78 valid replies has been collected including 72 students and 6 staff. Average rate 3.36 at the satisfaction of system. The most satisfaction item in new system is Online Renewal (Rate 3.78)

Conclusion With the limited resource, Hong Kong Shue Yan College Library had tried our best to provide a standard university library service. The migration of Millennium is a milestone to upgrade the library services. Linux is a suitable operation system for our due to the lower hardware cost and human resource cost.

Future Development of HKSYC Library Enhance customer orientated services and user education Expand Media Centre to an Integrated Learning Centre Enhance searching functions, implement link resolver, federated search function with open resource software Develop collabration with local and overseas university libraries Apply new technology to reduce the need of human resource, like RFID
