NASA LIFTOFF Instructional Case Plate Tectonics and Climate Change title of IC: author: Bryan Stephens

NASA LIFTOFF Instructional Case teacher: Bryan Stephens school: Centennial High School course/grade: Natural Science/9th district: Corona Norco USD email: bstephens@cnusd.k12.ca.us

NASA LIFTOFF Instructional Case How do earthquakes and volcanoes affect earth’s climate? generative question:

NASA LIFTOFF Instructional Case Earth Science 3. Plate tectonics operating over geologic time has changed the patterns of land, sea, and mountains on Earth’s surface. 4. Energy enters the Earth system primarily as solar radiation and eventually escapes as heat. 5. Heating of Earth’s surface and atmosphere by the sun drives convection within the atmosphere and oceans, producing winds and ocean currents. 6. Climate is the long-term average of a region’s weather and depends on many factors. 7. Each element on Earth moves among reservoirs, which exist in the solid earth, in oceans, in the atmosphere, and within and among organisms as part of biogeochemical cycles. 8. Life has changed Earth’s atmosphere, and changes in the atmosphere affect conditions for life. 9. The geology of California underlies the state’s wealth of natural resources as well as its natural hazards. I & E 1. Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As a basis for understanding this concept and addressing the content in the other four strands, students should develop their own questions and perform investigations. learning objectives (key standards):

NASA LIFTOFF Instructional Case FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT Daily quiz checks with Classroom Performance System (CPS) Using CPS to check for understanding during PowerPoints Classroom monitoring Cornell Style Note Taking Posters and Illustrations (see drawings and posters rubrics)  Mind Map SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT Homework quizzes from UTEP Test Generated exams – Exam View

NASA LIFTOFF Instructional Case Engage- YouTube Video Clips, Questions,YouTube Video Clips Exploration – Inquiry Activities, Reading and questions, Textbook search Explain – Pair share, journaling, diagrams, posters Extend – Research, Mind Maps, Cornell Notes summaries Evaluate – Tests, rubrics, projects 5E inquiry activities:

NASA LIFTOFF Instructional Case Cornell style notes: Information presented in PowerPoint and students are responsible for summarizing/reflection paragraphs. Clarification Pauses: A series of questions embedded into lectures. There is no “teacher talking” for about 2 minutes while students discuss the ideas with each other, check and clarify their notes, ask questions and CSP quizzes. Multimedia /Visual Aids Computer-Enhanced & Online Simulation Activities Shared Paragraphs: Cooperative Grouping during class or at the end of class, students are given a few minutes to write a short paragraph in their own words that explains that major ideas discussed that day. & Open ended Inquiry Activities Mind maps Academic Vocabulary integrated pedagogy:

NASA LIFTOFF Instructional Case Learning and Innovation Skills: Use a wide range of idea creation techniques (such as brainstorming, mind maps etc.) and allow students to create new and worthwhile ideas (both incremental and radical concepts) in the course of each day. Develop critical thinking skills and problem solving skills by performing controlled investigations based on their clarifying questions or through guided practice in class with a variety of Current Events articles. Information, Media and Technology Skills: Access and evaluate Information while completing homework assignments, performing research for Current Events reports, or performing Science Fair Projects. Select and use appropriate tools and technology (such as computer-linked probes, spreadsheets, and graphing calculators) to perform tests, collect data, analyze relationships, and display data. Life and Career Skills: Set goals with tangible/ intangible success criteria, utilize time and manage workload efficiently. Model appropriate behaviors such as being able to work independently and be self-directed learners that can go beyond basic mastery of skills and/or curriculum to explore and expand their own learning and opportunities to gain expertise. 21 st century skill integration:
