Surface Process Modeling: Applying the CSDMS Modeling Tool GEOG5700: Course Scope Irina Overeem CSDMS-Community Surface Dynamics Modeling System University of Colorado, Boulder, CO
2
Outline Scope Discussion Survey of Your Expectations Introduction to CSDMS Concept Survey Example of Climate-Stratigraphy Model Interactions Introduction to Coupled Modeling
3
CSDMS =Community Surface Dynamics Modeling System Promotes development and use of numerical modeling in earth surface dynamics research. ~ 450 members, (int.)nationally, academic, industry, government Model, Data and Educational Repositories Access to supercomputer system, called Beach Development of an easy-to-use Coupling Tool (CMT) What is CSDMS?
4
CSDMS Repositories o Data Repository o Model Repository o Educational Repository
5
Model Repository Models have meta-data Models are open-source Models are freely downloadable from CSDMS HPCC
6
Model Repository We developed a database for the Model Repository, now users: 1.Provide Metadata in new user-friendly questionnaire. 2.Submit Model and Associated Test & Validation files to CSDMS Three classes of Models
7
Model Repository CHILD GC2D TOPOFLOW Sept 2010, 93 terrestrial models, 57 Coastal models, 27 Marine models, 50 Hydrology models, 4 Carbonate models.
8
Objective: distribute model simulations, educational presentations, reports, publications, short course material. EKT Repository in 2010: - 3 modeling textbooks + all codes available through repository. - 4 modeling courses; more general to detailed processes. - 20 modeling labs; coastal-geological, terrestrial and sediment transport. - > 40 educational movies (real-world and model animations) Educational Repository
9
Lectures & Labs on Wiki http://csdms.colorado.edu/wiki/Education_portal
10
Educational Animations o Model animations to explain surface-dynamics processes. Every animation has a short description, and explanation of theory, and references. o Fit into the data-base structure in Wiki. CEM: Coastal Evolution of Wave-dominated Coast (Ashton & Murray).
11
Educational Animations Basic model experiments, stepping up in complexity. Associated theory and algorithms are key for learning processes as well as model sensitivity. SEDFLUX: Basic PlumeSEDFLUX: High Switch Frequency
12
CMT Tool The CSDMS Modeling Tool allows you to couple and run CSDMS components on the CSDMS supercomputer in a user-friendly environment. A component can be any unit that encapsulates some useful functionality, most often a model or function.
13
CMT Tool
14
Input data needs to be prepared; standardizing formats (NetCDF) Output data can be processed with VisIT, Lab 2 dedicated to NetCDF and VisIT Temperature, depth volume
15
Coupled Models Ability to drag in components; run them together 4 course labs will be dedicated to running models
16
Modeling Project Discuss and propose modeling projects 2 Labs for running simulations and presentations Report + documented simulations graded
