2 What is the Internet The Internet is a network of millions of computers linked together by telephone lines, fiber optic cables, satellite, and microwave connections.

3 Who Started the Internet? The Internet was started by the United Sates Department of Defense in 1969. It allowed information to move freely around a military computer network. (Intranet)

4 What is the WWW? The World Wide Web, usually called “ the Web ”, is the part of the Internet where millions of Web pages containing text, images, and sound from people all over the world are connected.

5 What Can I Use Internet for? You can use the Web for research, business, entertainment, or personal interests. Some specific things people do on the Web are send E-mail, go shopping, find jobs, get the latest news, order a meal, and make travel plans.

6 What Services does the Internet Provide? Basic services: Electronic mail, or email; Access to the World Wide Web, Newsgroups, Mailing lists, File transfer from other computers(FTP), The capacity to log on to other computers. Discussions with other people using chat.

7 What Services does the Internet Provide? More advanced services include: multimedia broadcasts, internet radio, secure transactions (e-check), and video conferencing. Wireless communication is also becoming popular. You can also finding people, finding businesses, products, and services.

8 What is Cookie? The messages your browser sends to get information from the Web are often recorded. Web sites can also ask your browser to save (or set up) a small lump of information, called a cookie, that the site can require the next time you visit.

9 What is Cookie used to? Cookies are commonly used to :. Track how often you visit a site. Save your login name and site password so that you don ’ t have to go through a login procedure every time when you visit. Store your billing address and credit card number.. Save a user profile so that the site can present information customized to your needs.

10 Email Email : Electronic mail, or email, may be the most heavily used features of the Internet. Header: are the beginning of any email message. Subject: Describes message (recommend) To: Lists recipient of the message (at least one required) Cc: List carbon copy recipient(s)_ (Optional) Bcc : Lists blind carbon copy recipient(s) name(s) will not be listed with the message (optional)

12 Mailing List You can access a world of mailing lists, organized around a specific topic, through the Internet. How Do mailing lists work? Each mailing list has two email addresses. One address is to subscribe (get on the list) and unsubscribe (get off the list). The other address is for communicating to the other members of the discussion group. When you send email to this second address, it gets distributed to everyone else on the list.

13 Mailing Lists How to “ get on ” a mailing list? Subsscribing to mailing lists is free-just send an email message to the “ subscription address. ” Leave the subject line of your message blank. In the message box type: Subscribe Ex: Subscribe ENGL-SL Nicole Huang

14 Mailing Lists How to “ get off ” a mailing list? unsubscribe If you want to remove yourself from the list, you will need to unsubscribe. The process varies from list to list; but generally, you ’ ll need to send a message with the word ” unsubscribe ” followed by the name of the lit and your email address to administrative address, not to the list address..
