CPR Competency American Heart Association established guidelines in 1974 Updates published in 1980, 1986, 1992, and 2000 36 months and 380 international experts in the field

CPR Competency Significant changes for adult CPR “Child is defined as a patient from 1 year to puberty. Anyone older is treated as an “Adult” “Phone first” and get AED for all sudden collapses Perform 5 cycles of CPR and then Phone for hypoxic or asphyxial arrest (drowning, drug overdose, etc.)

CPR Competency Head-tilt, chin-lift OK to open airway If suspected c-spine injury try jaw thrust first. 1 rescuer CPR compression to breath ratio – 30:2 compressions at 100/min. 2 rescuer CPR compression to breath ratio – 30:2 compressions at 100/min

CPR Competency Once advanced airway is placed compressions continue at 100/min with no pause for breath Breath rate no more than 8 – 10/min. Compressor should rotate or be relieved every 2 min.
